NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University women’s tennis team dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 5-2 loss to Detroit (1-2) Friday on the Monteagle Ridge campus.
Senior Mariam Al-Shikarchy won both her matches. She teamed with sophomore Jacquelyn Cary at No. 1 doubles to beat Holly Smith and Kaitlin McVehil, 8-5. In singles, Al-Shikarchy defeated Smith, 6-2, 6-1.
Niagara’s second point came at No. 2 singles where senior Kendra Daigler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) went to a tiebreaker to beat McVehil, 5-7, 6-3 (10-5).
The Purple Eagles dropped the doubles point when Daigler and sophomore Julianne Prokopich lost at No. 2 to Andrea Buter and Ashley Cummins, 8-6, and freshmen Paige Welch and Shella Dargot fell at No. 3 to Stephanie Hill and Rachel Merritt, 9-7.
In singles, Cary lost at No. 3, 7-5, 6-0, to Buter. At No. 4, Cummins defeated Prokopich, 6-2, 6-3. Dargot fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 to Amy Inman, and Welch lost 6-1, 6-1 to Merritt at No. 6.
Niagara returns to action Sunday when it hosts St. Francis (Pa.) at 10 a.m.
