Niagara Takes Down Merrimack for First Conference Win

Box Score NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.— The Niagara University tennis teams made a strong statement Friday, as both the men's and women's squads posted decisive 6-1 victories over Merrimack College in a conference doubleheader.
 
How it Happened
The Purple Eagles controlled the action throughout the afternoon, with the women's team setting the tone early by capturing the doubles point with wins from the duos of Gabriela Melo/Isabel Garcia and Larisa Kotok/Valeria Mora.
 
In singles play, the Niagara women continued their dominance with Melo, Garcia, Kotok, Saloni Tamang and Mora all securing victories. Melo and Tamang delivered strong performances on court one and five to help NU earn its first conference win of the year.  
 
The Niagara men matched their counterparts' success, beginning with doubles victories from the teams of Tanner Bedard/Vid Maric and Gurustat Makkar/Mikolaj Kowal in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles action.
 
The singles competition saw the Purple Eagles capture five of six matches, with Bedard rallying for an impressive 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 comeback victory over Henrik Lindeman in the top position. Trevor Masi, Kowal, Makkar and Jose Maria Garcia each added singles wins to secure the commanding team victory.
 
Up Next
Niagara heads to Orlando, Fl., for Spring Break. The men's team will open play on Wednesday against North Dakota while the women's team will take on Creighton to begin their week.
