Niagara University, N.Y. — Niagara men's tennis was swept 7-0 by Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, dropping the doubles point and all six singles matches.
The Mountaineers took the doubles point by claiming two of three courts. Alexi Roy and Ryan Wagner defeated Ary Bhawan and Shravan Somasi, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles, while Alessio Guarino and Akarsh Gaonkar handled Ekansh Shukla and Sarosh Rustomjee, 6-3, at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match between Logan Wong and Jose Maria Garcia against Nikolaos Fotios Makris and Stefanos Pournaropoulos ended in a tie at 5-4 and was not decided.
Mt. St. Mary's carried that momentum into singles play, where it won all six positions. The most competitive match came at No. 2, where Gaonkar edged Wong in a match tiebreak, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-7. At No. 3, Roy rallied past Bhawan, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Pournaropoulos defeated Garcia at No. 1, 7-6 (7), 6-4, while Luke Papayoanou took No. 6 from Somasi, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Mt. St. Mary's closed out the sweep at Nos. 4 and 5. Wagner defeated Shukla, 6-0, 6-0, and Guarino handled Rustomjee, 6-1, 6-2.
