Purple Eagles Dominate Upstate Alternative

Cortland, N.Y.—The Niagara women's track & field team traveled to Corland on Saturday to compete in the Cortland Upstate Alternative.

The Purple Eagles opened the day on top as the first event was the 4x100 meter. The team of Sapphire John, Lauryn Speicher, Hannah Adderley-Julien, and Deborah Borysewicz turned in a time of 48.25 to win the even by over five seconds.

Niagara swept the top three spots in the 100-meter hurdles. Clara Barr won the event with a time of 16.21 while Madelaine Schultz finished second with a time of 16.72. Dayanara Gonzalez finished third in the event with a time of 17.81. Barr set a new top time for the Purple Eagles this season. Gozalez set a new personal best in the event.

Senior Kate Pratt turned in a time of 57.37 in the 400-meter which is a new personal record. Daniela Velez and Arrianna Blachowicz finished in fourth and fifth respectively with times of 1:05.04 and 1:05.27. Blachowicz was the top finisher in the second heat of the event. Alissa Mete finished second in the second heat as she finished eighth overall with a time of 1:06.11.

Both Sara Mueller and Lydia Chunco ran in the 5000-meter for the Purple Eagles. Mueller turned in a time of 19:51.11 as she finished second in the event. Chunco finished ninth overall with a time of 22:31.32.

The Purple Eagles once again swept the podium in the 100-meter. Borysewicz turned in a time of 12.75 as she won the first heat. John finished second with a time of 13.24. Speicher finished third in the race with a time of 13.45. Gonzalez finished seventh overall in the event as she finished first in the fourth hear, she finished with a time of 14.25.

Three Purple Eagles finished atop the 400-meter hurdles with Vanessa Woolery finishing first with a time of 1:10.75. Lara Gritzek finished second with a time of 1:13.42. Mychena Smith finished third in the race with a time of 1:16.36.

Pratt came away with her second win of the day as she won the 200-meter. She turned in a time of 26.36. Blachowicz finished third in the event with a time of 28.61. Schultz won the second heat of the event with a time of 28.83. Pratt and Schultz set a new personal best in the event.

For the first time in her career, Mete competed in the 3000-meter Steeplechase, she won the event with a time of 11:53.43. She broke a school record that had been a program record since Apr. 2, 2017.

The Purple Eagles won their second relay of the day as they won the 4x400. John, Adderly-Julien, Woolery, and Pratt turned in a time of 4:14.68 and won the event by over a minute.

Megan Jackson participated in the discus throw. She finished 11th overall with a best throw of 27.24. Jackson also finished eighth in the shot put with a best throw of 8.96.

Adderley-Julien and Barr took the top two spots in long jump. Adderley-Julien set a new program record with a best jump of 5.39. Barr finished with a best jump of 4.95.

The Purple Eagles are back in action next weekend at the UB Alumni Invitational on Saturday.
