Box Score 2 Syracuse, N.Y.—The Niagara tennis teams traveled to Syracuse to take on Colgate in a non-conference match on Friday. The women's team started the afternoon with a 4-3 win while the men closed out the day with a 4-3 win.
Women's Recap
Doubles
Niagara opened the match by taking the doubles points. Coral Rodriguez and Gabriela Melo were slotted in first doubles. The duo won their third match of the season together 6-3.
Elena Mayet and Larisa Kotok played together in second doubles and won 6-3 to secure the doubles point. It was the first time that Kotok and Mayet played together this season.
Singles
Mayet notched a comeback victory in first singles, after dropping the first set 6-0, she won the second set 7-6 to force a third set. In the third set, she earned her fourth match of the season.
Melo continued a successful freshman campaign as she was slotted in third singles. She fell 6-4 in he first set before winning the second set 7-5. In the third and final set she secured the win with a 6-2 set win.
The dual match was tied at three as the fifth singles match was the final match. Enrica Favaron was slotted in fifth singles. Favaron won the first set 6-3. She fell 6-3 in the second set. In the match deciding third set Favoron defeated Colgate with a 7-5 win.
It is the first time that Niagara has defeated Colgate since 2019.
Men's Recap
Doubles
Trevor Masi and Tanner Bedard were paired up in first doubles. They came away with a 6-3 win.
The freshman duo of Vid Maric and José Maria García were teamed up together in third doubles. They won their match 6-3 to secure the doubles point for the Purple Eagles.
Singles
Bedard won his second match of the night as he was slotted in first singles. He won the first set 6-4 before winning the second set 7-5.
Manuel Along picked up the second singles win for Niagara has he was slotted in sixth singles. He won the first set 6-1. After falling 6-2 in the second set, he won the third set 7-5.
With the dual match tied at three, the second singles match was the last match remaining. Maric looked to give Niagara the win. He won the first set 6-3 but fell in the second set 6-4. In the tiebreaker set he won 7-6 to give the Purple Eagles the win.
It is the first time since 2015 that Niagara has defeated Colgate.

Both teams are back in action Sunday at South Town Tennis Center in Orchard Park. Niagara will host Binghamton The women are slated to start at 1:30 while the men are scheduled to start at 5:30.
