Binghamton, N.Y.—The Niagara men's tennis team continued its opening weekend at the Binghamton Championships.
After winning his first two matches of the weekend on Friday, Tanner Bedard was in the Lane bracket finals against Amar Tahirovic from Bucknell. In the first set, Bedard fell 6-3. In the second set, Bedard could not recover as he fell 6-4 and took second place in the top tier bracket.
Vic Maric picked up his first collegiate win as faced Kaper Piekarek from Le Moyne. In the opening set he won 6-3 before securing the win with a 6-1 set win in the second set. In his final match of the Roher bracket west final he faced Alan Ton from Army. He fell 6-3 in the opening set before falling 7-6 in the second set.
After winning his second match on Friday afternoon, Manuel Alonso faced Ethan Esclamado from Bucknell in the Nath west final. Alonso won the opening set 6-3 and took the win as he won the second set 6-4.
Roberto Vaca went 1-1 on Friday and found himself in the third place match of the Shutter bracket. He was matched up against Mikey Weitz from Colgate. Vaca fell in the first set 6-4 and was unable to force a third set as he lost 6-3 in the second set.
Bryce Bodak also went 1-1 on Friday, he responded with a win following his opening match loss. He advanced to the Sussman west final as he faced Leon Grundstroem from Le Moyne. Bodak took the opening set with a 7-6 win. In the second set he fell 6-1 to force a tie breaking set. In the tie breaker set he fell 10-4 in the final set.
In doubles, Bedard and Bodak opened their Saturday with a 6-3 win over a duo from Bucknell to improve to 2-0. In their second match of the afternoon, they defeated a different duo from Bucknell to finish the first two days 3-0. On Sunday, the duo completed the perfect doubles weekend as they defeated a team from Army 6-4. With the win over Army, the duo won their flight of doubles.
Alonso and Makkar fell in both of their matches on Saturday as they fell 7-6 to a team from UB. In their second match of the day they fell to a duo from Colgate 7-6. In their final match of the weekend on Sunday, the duo fell 6-1 to a team from Colgate.
Maric and Vaca won their first match on Friday and kept the momentum going into Saturday. In their first doubles match of the day, they defeated a team from Army 7-5. Later in the day they defeated another team from Army to move to 3-0 in the tournament. Maric and Vaca could not complete the perfect weekend as they fell 6-3, the duo took second in their doubles flight.
Trevor Masi and Rohan Srivastava were 1-0 after day one and improved to 2-0 in their second match. They won 7-6 over a team from Bucknell. Unfortunately, the duo had to withdraw for the remaining two doubles matches.
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 30 as they host Daemen at the Niagara Tennis Courts.
