Binghamton, N.Y.—The Niagara men's tennis team kicked off their 2023 fall season on Friday as they traveled to Binghamton to compete in the Binghamton Championships.
Trevor Masi started his day with a loss in his opening match. In the first set he fell 6-1, in the second set he fell 7-6. In his second match of the bracket he fell in three sets. After falling 6-1 in the first set, he responded with a 6-4 win in the second set. In the tie breaking set, he fell 10-6.
Tanner Bedard opened his 2023 season on a high note as he won his opening match with a 6-4, 6-4 sweep to advance to the second round. In the second round he faced Josh Israel from Colgate. Bedard took the opening set 6-2 and closed out the match with a 6-3 win to advance. Tomorrow he will take on Amar Tahirovic from Bucknell.
Freshman Vid Maric started his collegiate career on Friday as he faced Oscar Martinez from MAAC rival Siena. In the first set, Maric fell 6-3, in the second set he could not recover as he fell 6-2.
Reigning All-MAAC honorees Gurustat Makkar and Manuel Alonso, both found themselves in the Nath bracket with Makkar drawing the one seed and Alson drawing the seventh seed.
Makkar won his opening set in his first match with a 6-2 set win. In the second set, Makkar secured his first win of the season with a 6-3 win as he advanced. In his second match he suffered a loss to Matthew Carlson from the host Binghamton, 7-5, 6-3.
Alonso started his season against Yu-Shiang Huang from Buffalo. In the opening set he fell 6-3. He could not recover in the second set as he fell 6-3. In his second match of the day, he faced Parker McGowan from Colgate and notched his first win of the season. In the first set he fell 6-4. In the second set he came up with a 6-2 win. In the tie breaker set he won 12-10.
Roberto Vaca opened his senior season with a win as he faced Rodrigo Beires from Le Moyne. In the opening set he took a 7-6 win. In the second set he dominated with a 6-1 win to secure his first win of the season. In his second match of the day, he fell to Jack Hanna from Army, 6-0, 6-4.
Bryce Bodak drew the second seed in the Sussman bracket. In his opening set he fell 6-4. In the second set of the match, he fell 6-3. In his second match, he defeated Dhananjay Karthik Athreya from Buffalo. After falling 6-2 in the first set, he won the second set 6-3. In the tie breaker set he won 10-4 to take the win.
Both Rohan Srivastava and Salvador Vazquez were in the Cestarollo bracket. Srivastava started his season on a high note as he took the first set 6-2. In the second set he secured his first win of the season with a 6-2 win. In his second match of the day, he fell to Michael Rooney from Army who had an opening round bye. He fell 7-6, 6-4.
Vazquez fell in his first set of the match 6-2. He responded with a 6-1 win in the second set to force a third set. In the tie breaker set he fell 10-6. He faced Elijah Zifferblatt from Siena in his second match of the day but fell to his MAAC counterpart. He fell 7-5 in the first set but then notched a 6-0 sweep in the second set. In the third set he fell 10-7.
Four duos are competing in a round robin tournament for doubles. Bedard and Bodak teamed up for their first doubles win of the season as they defeated a team from Colgate 6-2.
The All-MAAC duo of Makkar and Alonso fell in their first match of the season 6-1 to a team from Buffalo.
Masi and Srivastava notched their first win of the season as they defeated a team from Binghamton, 6-2.
Vaca and Maric teamed up for their first win as they were forced to go to a tie breaker with a team from Army. In the tie breaker they won 8-6 to take the win.
The Purple Eagles are back in action tomorrow for the second day of the Binghamton Championships.
