Tennis Drops MAAC Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Orchard Park, N.Y.—The Niagara tennis teams opened MAAC play on Saturday as both the men's and women's teams hosted Quinnipiac. The women's team fell 7-0 while the men's team lost 4-3 to the Bobcats.
Men's Recap
Doubles

Jorge Sedeno and Gurustat Makkar notched the first Purple Eagle win in second doubles as they won 6-4 over Quinnipiac.
Tanner Bedard and Trevor Masi were slotted in first doubles but fell 6-2. The Bobcats earned a win in third doubles over Manuel Alonso and Roberto Vaca to take the doubles point.

Singles

Bedard notched a win in second singles as he won in three sets. He won the first set 7-6 before falling 6-3 in the second set. He took the point and the win in the third set as he won 6-3.
Masi was slotted in third singles and took the win in straight set. He won 7-5 in the first set and 6-1 in the second set.
Makkar used his momentum from doubles in his sixth singles match as he won in straight sets. He won 6-1, 6-3.
In fourth singles, Alonso fell in three sets while Sedeno and Bodak fell in straight sets.

Women's Recap
Doubles

The duo of Jaida Borg and Elena Mayet needed just 23 minutes as they won first doubles 6-0.
The Purple Eagles could not take the doubles point as Mercedes Velasco and Coral Rodriguez fell 6-3 in second doubles. Enrica Favaron and Erika Gonzalez fell 6-1 in third doubles.

Singles

Rodriguez was slotted in first singles and fell in three sets. She won the first set 6-3 but fell 6-1 in the second set and 7-5 in the third set.
In second singles, Mayet lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Gonzalez fell in the first set of third singles but forced a third set with a 6-2 win in the second set. In the third set she fell 6-3.
Borg fell 6-3 in the opening set but responded with a 6-3 win in the second set. She fell in the third set of fourth doubles.
In fifth and sixth doubles, Velasco and Favaron both fell in straight sets.

Up Next

Both teams will be off until they travel to Orlando for a hand full of matches over spring break. Both teams are in action on Mar. 13 against Saint Thomas Aquinas.
