DENVER, Colo. – Former Niagara baseball outfielder Wynton Bernard ('12) has been called up by the Colorado Rockies, announced by the team on Friday. Bernard is slated to make his MLB debut tonight versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.
This is the first time two Niagara players have made their MLB debuts in the same season since 1923 (Benny Bengough, Ed Lennon); Matt Brash made his debut with the Seattle Mariners at the start of the season. This is the first time two former Purple Eagles will be active on an MLB roster at the same time since 1953 (Sal Maglie, Rinty Monahan).
Bernard has had a successful minor league career, playing for 10 years. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 35
th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Bernard has had a phenomenal 2022 season with the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Rockies Triple-A affiliate. He's batting. 325 with 112 hits, including 17 homeruns, 78 runs scored, 74 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. Bernard is third in the Pacific Coast League (PCL) in hits, runs scored and RBIs, sixth in stolen bases and eighth in batting average.
Over his 10-year minors career, Bernard is batting .286 with 825 hits, 50 homeruns, 478 runs scored, 296 RBIs and 220 stolen bases.
In his career at Niagara (2009-12), Bernard played in 140 games. He batted .279 with 138 hits, 75 runs scored, 68 RBIs and 72 stolen bases.
