Niagara Splits Season Series Against The Jaspers

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles split a doubleheader against Manhattan on Sunday to split the four-game season series. 

Game Recap
  • An RBI double from Cole Tucker and an RBI single from Michael Gabriele gave the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
  • In the top of the second, Dawson Bailey, Benny Serrano and Brady Desjardins all scored on Manhattan errors and an RBI ground-out from Marty Cole gave Niagara a 6-0 lead over the Jaspers.
  • The Jaspers got on the board in the bottom of the second, but Niagara led by five, 6-1.
  • In the fourth, Tucker singled to left field, scoring Cole O'Connor. Tucker then stole home plate to give NU an 8-1 advantage.
  • The Jaspers scored four runs in the seventh, but Niagara held onto its lead, winning game one, 8-5.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Tucker and Gabriele led NU with three hits each. O'Connor added two hits.
  • Tucker led the team in stolen bases with three.
  • Tucker had a team-high two RBIs and O'Connor had a team-high three runs scored.
  • Alex Jones (1-0) earned the win on the mound. He fanned four and allowed three earned runs on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got off to a hot start in game two, with early back-to-back homers in the first inning. Tucker homered to left field, driving in three runs, and Peter Battaglia hit a solo homerun to give NU a 4-0 lead.
  • The Jaspers scored three runs in the bottom of the first, but NU still led, 4-3.
  • In the top of the second, Benny Serrano went yard, batting in two runs to put Niagara ahead by three, 6-3.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Manhattan took the lead, 7-6.
  • An RBI ground-out from O'Connor in the third tied things up, 7-7.
  • An RBI triple and a two-run homerun from the Jaspers in the bottom of the fifth put them back in the lead, 10-7.
  • In the top of the sixth frame, an RBI double from Battaglia brought the Purple Eagles within two runs of Manhattan, 10-8.
  • The Jaspers, however, picked up momentum, scoring two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a 15-8 lead over NU.
  • Manhattan held Niagara off in the ninth to earn the 15-8 win in game two.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Tucker led NU with three hits. O'Connor, Serrano, Battaglia and Gabriele each added two hits for NU.
  • Tucker had a team-high three RBIs, while Battaglia and Serrano each batted in two runs.
  • Zach Cameron (2-2) took the loss on the mound. He struck out two and allowed five earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
