Purple Eagles Swept By No. 25 Fairfield

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles were swept by No. 25 Fairfield in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • Game one was a pitcher's duel between the Purple Eagles and the Stags as both Jacob Bruning and Michael Sansone tossed a complete game and each allowed the opposing team just four hits.
  • In the top of the second, a homerun from the Stags gave them a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Mike Brisson had NU's first hit of the day in the bottom of the third with an infield bunt. He then stole second base to get in scoring position with two outs on the board, but he was left stranded as the next Niagara batter grounded out.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Benny Serrano had a lead-off double. Cole Tucker was walked on the next play and Serrano stole third. The next three batters, however, went down in order and Serrano and Tucker were stranded on the corners.
  • Cole O'Connor and Serrano both singled in the bottom of the sixth. After recording one out, Peter Battaglia was intentionally walked to load the bases, but the Purple Eagles were not able to capitalize and remained scoreless.
  • The Stags and the Purple Eagles both went three-up, three-down in the seventh inning and Fairfield earned the 1-0 win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Bruning (3-2) pitched his first career complete game. He fanned seven batters in 7.0 innings pitched. He walked four and allowed just four hits and one earned run.
  • Serrano had a team-high two hits. Brisson and O'Connor each added one hit.
  • Brisson and Serrano each had one stolen base.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With two runners on base, Dawson Bailey singled to right field, driving in one run to give Niagara a 1-0 lead.
  • Fairfield took the lead, 2-1, in the second after an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
  • In the bottom of the second, Joe Tevlin singled to center field and was advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt from Brady Desjardins. With two outs on the board, he advanced to third on a passed ball, but the next Niagara batter struck out to end the inning.
  • The Purple Eagles had another scoring opportunity in the seventh. Max Giordano reached base on a Fairfield error. Giordano stole second and advanced to third base on a throwing error from the Stags' catcher, but the next NU batter lined out for the third out of the inning and Giordano was stranded.
  • An RBI double in the eighth put the Stags ahead by two, 3-1.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning, Spencer Marcus came in to pinch hit and, with one out on the board, singled to shortstop. Tucker was walked to put runners on first and second, but Battaglia hit into a double play to bring the inning to a close.
  • In the top of the ninth, an RBI single from Fairfield put the Stags ahead by three, 4-1.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Giordano was hit by a pitch to get on base, but the Purple Eagles were not able to overcome the Stags as they dropped game two, 4-1.

Eagle's Eye On
  • O'Connor, Marcus, Bailey and Tevlin each had one hit.
  • Bailey and Giordano each had one stolen base.
  • Alex Jones (1-1) took the loss on the mound. He struck out a career-high six batters in 5.0 innings pitched, while giving up five hits and two earned runs and walking just two.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles play another doubleheader versus the Stags on Sunday, May 9 starting at 12:00 p.m. Niagara will celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of game one.
