Purple Eagles Win One Against Manhattan

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Niagara split a doubleheader with the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • Manhattan jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles after a solo homerun and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
  • The Jaspers extended their lead, 3-0, off an RBI single in the second inning.
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the top of third after an RBI single from Cole O'Connor and an RBI groundout from Peter Battaglia and trailed the Jaspers by just one run, 3-2.
  • A two-run homerun from the Jaspers in the bottom of the fourth frame put their lead back at three, 5-2.
  • RBI singles from both Michael Gabriele and Spencer Marcus in the fifth left the Purple Eagles again trailing by just one, 5-4, but NU and Manhattan both went scoreless in the remaining two innings and the Jaspers earned the one-run victory.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Gabriele, O'Connor and Cole Tucker led NU with two hits each.
  • Tucker and Dawson Bailey each had one stolen base for the Purple Eagles.
  • Kyle Smyth (0-1) took the loss on the mound. He fanned three and gave up two earned runs on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • A solo homerun from Battaglia in the top of the first gave NU the quick 1-0 lead over the Jaspers.
  • In the top of the third, Battaglia homered for the second time, driving in three runs. Joe Tevlin also had an RBI double in the inning to extend Niagara's lead, 5-0.
  • The Jaspers scored three runs in the bottom of the third, but NU still led, 5-3.
  • Manhattan took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring three more runs to get ahead by one, 6-5.
  • In the top of the eighth, an RBI groundout from Benny Serrano tied the score, 6-6. Matt Ward, who came in to pinch hit, then singled up the middle, sending a run home to put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 7-6. An RBI single from O'Connor put Niagara ahead by two, 8-6.
  • Giordano and Serrano both scored on Manhattan errors in the ninth, extending NU's lead to four runs, 10-6.
  • The Purple Eagles held the Jaspers scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to win game two, 10-6.
 
Eagle's Eye On
  • Gabriele led NU in hits with three. Battaglia and O'Connor each added two hits.
  • Battaglia had a team-high four RBIs.
  • Giordano, Gabriele, Serrano and Mike Brisson each had one stolen base.
  • Steven Hospital (2-0) earned the win. He fanned four and gave up just one hit in 2.2 innings pitched.
  • Alex MacKinnon earned his second save of the season. He struck out three and did not allow any hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
