Purple Eagles Split With The Griffs

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles split a Battle of the Bridge doubleheader with Canisius on Wednesday.

Game Recap
  • Canisius took a quick 4-0 lead in game one after three runs scored on an error and an RBI triple.
  • In the bottom of the first inning, Benny Serrano blasted his second homerun of the season over the center field fence, also plating Dawson Bailey, to cut the Canisius lead in half, 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the third, Peter Battaglia, the program leader in career homeruns, added to his record, homering to left field to leave Niagara trailing by just one run, 4-3.
  • The Griffs, however, dominated the remainder of the game, scoring one run in the fifth and one run in the sixth to earn a 6-3 victory over the Purple Eagles.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Liam Ward led the Purple Eagles in hits with two, one of which went for extra bases.
  • Serrano led the team in RBIs with two.
  • Bailey had one stolen base.
  • Tommy Bednarski (0-2) took the loss. He struck out one in 1.0 inning pitched.
  • Matt Grace struck out three batters in 3.2 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • The Griffs got on the board in the top of the second inning after an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Niagara answered in the bottom of the third. Bailey hit a solo homerun to tie the score, 1-1. An RBI single from Cole Tucker gave the Purple Eagles the lead, 2-1.
  • A two-run homerun from the Griffs in the fourth inning put them back on top, 3-2.
  • With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Battaglia was walked, sending Bailey home to tie the score, 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Matt Zaremba was hit by a pitch to get on base. Mike Brisson came in to pinch run and quickly stole second base to get into scoring position. Ward then singled to center field, scoring Brisson to give the Purple Eagles a one-run lead, 4-3.
  • The Griffs went down in order in the ninth to secure Niagara's 4-3 victory.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Max Giordano had a team-high three hits. One of Giordano's hits was a double.
  • Bailey added two hits for the Purple Eagles.
  • Zach Cameron (1-1) picked up his first win of the season on the mound. He fanned six batters, just one short of his career-high, and allowed just two hits and one walk in 5.0 innings pitched.
