Niagara Takes One From Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Niagara baseball team split a doubleheader with the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday. Both games played were seven-inning games.

Game Recap
  • An RBI double, a score on a wild pitch and an RBI single gave the Peacocks a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Joe Tevlin picked up Niagara's first hit of the game in the top of the fifth, singling to shortstop. He advanced to second base on a sac bunt from Mike Brisson, but the Purple Eagles were not able to capitalize.
  • The Peacocks extend their lead, 5-0, in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run homerun.
  • Niagara had its best chances of the day in the top of the seventh. Cole O'Connor, Michael Gabriele and Tevlin all singled to load the bases with just one out on the board, but two quick outs earned the Peacocks the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Tevlin led the Purple Eagles in hits with two.
  • Cole Tucker had one stolen base.
  • Marcus Cashman (2-1) took the loss. He fanned four and gave up three hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
  • Tyler Prospero tossed 3.0 innings and struck out a career-high six batters.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game two. In the top of the first, Peter Battaglia reached base on an error, which gave Max Giordano enough time to score. O'Connor then singled to center field to plate Spencer Marcus and give the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead.
  • An RBI double from O'Connor and an RBI single from Matt Zaremba in the top of the third doubled Niagara's lead, 4-0.
  • Dawson Bailey hit a lead-off homerun to open the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly from O'Connor plated a run and an RBI single from Gabriele extended NU's lead, 7-0.
  • Saint Peter's got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but NU maintained a comfortable lead, 7-1.
  • Niagara had a big sixth inning. Giordano scored on a balk, O'Connor had an RBI single, Zaremba had a two-RBI double and Brisson had an RBI double, earning the Purple Eagles a 12-1 victory over the Peacocks.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Niagara's 12 runs scored are a team-high this season and their 11-run victory is also its largest of the season.
  • O'Connor led the Purple Eagles with four hits, which is a career-high.
  • Bailey, Marcus and Zaremba each had two hits.
  • O'Connor (three) and Zaremba (three) each recorded career-highs in RBIs.
  • Giordano led the team in stolen bases with two.
  • Ben Erwin (2-1) earned the win. He struck out a career-best eight, and gave up just three hits and one earned run in 5.0 innings pitched.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles play a single nine-inning game with the Peacocks on Sunday, April 11 at 11:00 a.m. The Peacocks will forfeit game two of the scheduled doubleheader due to lack of players available due to Covid-19 protocol.
