Purple Eagles Win A Pair Against Quinnipiac

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles improved to 6-4 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader against Quinnipiac on Friday.

Game Recap
  • The game was defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Bobcats through the first four innings, but Niagara broke it open in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI double from Max Giordano put Niagara on the board. A RBI single from Cole Tucker gave the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead. Two walks with bases loaded sent two more runs across the plate for NU to put the Purple Eagles ahead of Quinnipiac, 4-0.
  • A sacrifice fly from Giordano in the bottom of the sixth scored Liam Ward. Josh Marchese then hit a three-run homerun, extending Niagara's lead to 8-0.
  • The Bobcats scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome NU and the Purple Eagles won game one, 8-4.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Tucker and Joe Tevlin each had a team-best two hits.
  • Marchese led the team in RBIs with three. Giordano had two RBIs.
  • Marcus Cashman (2-0) earned the win on the mound. He fanned a career-high four batters and allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • The Bobcats opened scoring, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Niagara answered in the bottom of the inning. Peter Battaglia, the program's career homeruns record holder, hit a two-run homerun over the left field fence to put the Purple Eagles on top, 2-1.
  • Quinnipiac added two runs in the third to reclaim the lead, 3-2.
  • In the bottom of the third, a two-RBI single from Matt Zaremba put Niagara back ahead by one, 4-3.
  • A two-run homerun from the Bobcats in the fifth put them in the lead once again, 5-4.
  • The Purple Eagles, however, took back control in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tucker had time to score as Michael Gabriele reached base on an error from the Bobcats' second baseman. Zaremba then hit a sacrifice fly to score Marchese and put NU ahead, 6-5.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single from Benny Serrano and an RBI ground-rule double from Battaglia extended Niagara's lead, 8-5.
  • The Bobcats added one run in the eighth and one run in the ninth, but the Purple Eagles held onto the lead the sweep the day's doubleheader.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Battaglia and Zaremba led the Purple Eagles in hits with two each. They also led the team in RBIs with three each.
  • Giordano had one stolen base.
  • Jacob Bruning (1-1) earned the win. He struck out eight batters in 5.2 innings pitched.

  • The Purple Eagles host the Bobcats for two more games on Saturday, April 3. Game one is set for an 11:00 a.m. start.
