Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against The Saints

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles swept a doubleheader against Siena on Saturday to close out their season series with the Saints.

Game Recap
  • Niagara got on the board in the first inning. Peter Battaglia double to right center, scoring Benny Serrano and Cole O'Connor singles to left field, scoring Battaglia and giving NU a 2-0 lead.
  • An RBI single from the Saints in the third halved Niagara's lead, 2-1.
  • An RBI single from Joe Tevlin in the top of the sixth inning put Niagara ahead, 3-1.
  • The Purple Eagles kept the Saints off the board in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Cole Tucker had a team-high two hits.
  • Battaglia, O'Connor and Tevlin each recorded one RBI.
  • Battaglia scored a team-best two runs.
  • Ben Erwin (1-1) earned the win. He struck out two and allowed one earned run in 4.0 innings pitched.
  • Alex MacKinnon picked up his first save of the season. He struck out two and gave up just one hit in 2.2 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • Niagara opened scoring in the second inning of game two. Tucker doubled down the left field line to score Max Giordano. Tucker then scored on a balk. Dawson Bailey then came up big with a three-run homerun to give the Purple Eagles a 5-0 lead over the Saints.
  • The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double.
  • Two homeruns from Siena in the bottom of the third brought the Saints within one run of the Purple Eagles, 5-4.
  • Two doubles that scored a total of three runs put the Saints in the lead, 7-5, in the sixth frame.
  • Niagara quickly got back on top. In the top of the seventh, Tucker blasted a two-run homerun over the left field fence to tie the score, 7-7. RBI doubles from both Tevlin and Liam Ward put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 9-7.
  • In the top of the eighth, Battaglia went yard to extend NU's lead, 10-7.
  • The Saints added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut NU's lead to one run, 10-9, but the Saints went down in order in the ninth and the Purple Eagles earned the doubleheader sweep.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Tucker had a team-best three hits. Bailey, Gabriele and Tevlin each added two hits.
  • Bailey and Tucker each batted in three runs.
  • Steven Hospital (1-0) earned the win on the mound.
  • Zach Cameron earned his second save of the season. He struck out two and didn't allow any hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
