SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles began their 2020-21 campaign with a 75-45 defeat at perennial power Syracuse on Thursday night.
Game Summary
Raheem Solomon scored the first points of the season for the Purple Eagles to tie the game at 3-3.
Kobi Nwandu, who made his debut after redshirting last season, scored on Niagara's next possession for a 5-3 NU lead. The basket started a string of seven lead changes through the opening seven minutes, capped by a
Nick MacDonald triple for a 14-13 lead with 13:19 remaining in the half. However, the Orange reeled off a 26-2 run in eight minutes.
The Purple Eagles closed the half on a 12-3 run to trail 42-28 at the break.
Touba Traore, making his collegiate debut, started the run with a free throw for his first career point. NU connected on 3 of 5 3-pointers, with two provided by
Marcus Hammond, during the run.
Nicholas Kratholm scored the opening points of the second half to extend the run to 14-3, but the Orange answered with a 12-2 run. Syracuse pushed its lead to 64-34 with 11 minutes remaining as the Orange led as much as 32 points on their way to their tenth straight win in the series.

- Marcus Hammond led Niagara with 10 rebounds for his second career double-digit rebound game. He shared game-high marks in scoring with eight points and led NU in steals with three while dishing out three assists.
- Nicholas Kratholm scored eight points to share game-high honors.
- Nick MacDonald netted eight points to share game-high marks.
- Kobi Nwandu led NU with four assists.
