Purple Eagles Drop Doubleheader To Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles dropped a pair of games to the Siena Saints on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead after a two-RBI single from Joseph Tevlin. Seven runs from the Saints in the bottom of the first, however, put them in the lead, 7-2.
  • In the top of the second, Dawson Bailey tripled down the right field line, scoring Darian Blanks. Bailey then scored on a ground-out from Benny Serrano to leave NU trailing by just three runs, 7-4. The Saints scored four times in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead, 11-4.
  • Peter Battaglia went yard for the ninth time this season in the third inning. An RBI triple off the bat of Max Giordano in the fourth cut Siena's lead, 11-6.
  • The Purple Eagles dominated the next two innings. In the fifth, RBI singles from Serrano, Michael Gabriele and Battaglia added three more runs for Niagara. RBI singles from Bailey and Gabriele and an RBI double from Serrano added three runs in the sixth. Bailey also scored on an error by the Saints' center fielder to give Niagara a 13-11 lead heading into the seventh inning.
  • Siena reclaimed the lead, 14-13, in the bottom of the sixth stanza.
  • In the top of the seventh, Blanks hit his first career homerun, tying the score at 14-14.
  • The Saints added three more runs in the seventh and earned the 17-14 victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • The Purple Eagles and the Saints combined for 31 runs and 42 hits. Niagara's 14 runs scored and 21 hits are its most of both this season.
  • Blanks led the Purple Eagles in hits with four, which is a career-high.
  • Bailey, Serrano and Battaglia each added three hits.
  • Serrano led the team in RBI with three.
  • Bailey, Blanks and Serrano scored a team-best three runs each.
  • Kyle Smyth (2-1) took the loss on the mound. He struck out one and allowed three earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
  • Tyler Howard, Jordan Parranto, Ben Erwin and Yohn Zapata-Baez also saw time on the mound. Erwin led with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • An RBI single from the Saints in the bottom of the first inning gave them a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • It was truly a pitcher's duel as both teams went scoreless until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, Giordano scored on a fielding error by Siena's pitcher, tying the score, 1-1.
  • Game two, which was only scheduled for seven innings, headed into extras as the score remained tied.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, with bases loaded for the Saints, their pinch-hitter drew a walk, sending the game winning run home.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Bailey, Giordano and Josh Marchese led the Purple Eagles with two hits each.
  • Matthew Brash went 7.1 innings on the mound in the no-decision. He fanned seven and allowed just four hits and one earned run.
  • Yohn Zapata-Baez (1-1) took the loss, allowing the game-winning run.
