LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles earned a 9-7 victory over the Siena Saints in the final game of a three-game series on Monday.

Game Recap
  • Siena got on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Two RBI singles and an RBI double from the Saints in the bottom of the fifth extended their lead, 5-0, but Niagara was undaunted.
  • In the top of the seventh, Matthew Grace went yard, sending three runs across home plate to put NU down by just one, 4-3. An RBI single from Matt Zaremba tied the score, 4-4. Jacob Bruning then doubled down the left field line, driving two runs in to give the Purple Eagles the lead, 6-4.
  • Siena reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 7-6, but Niagara remained strong on offense.
  • In the top of the eighth, a two-RBI double from Benny Serrano put Niagara back on top, 8-7.
  • Joey Battaglia capped the day for the Purple Eagles, blasting his first career homerun over the center field fence to put Niagara up by two, 9-7.
  • The Purple Eagles held the Saints off in the bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts and a fly out, icing the game three victory.  

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Bruning started on the mound for the Purple Eagles and also batted in the designated hitter spot. On the bump, he struck out a career-high six batters in 4.0 innings pitched. He allowed just two hits and one earned run. At the plate, Bruning recorded his first two career RBI and his first career double.
  • Battaglia, Serrano and Dawson Bailey led NU with two hits each.
  • Grace led the team in RBI with a career-high three.
  • Serrano added two RBI and two stolen bases.
  • Alex MacKinnon (2-0) picked up the win on the mound. He struck out a career-high six batters in 4.0 innings pitched. He allowed just two hits and two walks, while giving up three runs, none of which were earned.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles close out the regular season May 16-17 when they host crosstown rival Canisius for the annual Battle of the Bridge series. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16 and will play a single game at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17. Niagara will celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of Friday's game.
