Purple Eagles Split A Pair With The Red Foxes

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles split a doubleheader with the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • Marist claimed the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homerun. The Red Foxes extended their lead to 6-0 in the second with a sacrifice bunt and a two-run homer.
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the third frame, cutting Marist's lead, 6-1, after Darian Blanks scored on a throwing error by the Red Foxes' third baseman.
  • Marist added two run in the bottom of the third, two runs in the fourth and another three-run homerun in the fifth to take a 13-1 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the top of the sixth, an RBI double from Max Giordano added another run for the Purple Eagles, but the Red Foxes added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to maintain a commanding lead, 16-2.
  • A score from Cole O'Connor in the seventh brought NU's run total to three, but another three-run homerun from Marist in the bottom of the inning scored the final runs of the game and the Red Foxes earned the 19-3 win.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Michael Gabriele led the Purple Eagles in hits with two.
  • Giordano and Blanks each recorded one RBI.
  • Tommy Bednarski (1-5) took the loss on the mound. He struck out one and allowed seven earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the top of the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead after an RBI single form Dawson Bailey.
  • A sacrifice fly from Joseph Tevlin in the fourth scored Giordano to extend NU's lead over Marist, 2-0.
  • Marist, however, took the lead, 3-2, in the fifth inning after a three-run homerun.
  • In the top of the sixth frame, a sacrifice fly from Josh Marchese sent Peter Battaglia home to tie the score, 3-3.
  • Battaglia blasted a two-run homerun over the fence in left center field to put Niagara back on top, 5-3. The Purple Eagles held the Red Foxes off in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Battaglia's homerun was his eighth of the season, which leads the Purple Eagles.
  • Bailey led NU in hits with three, while Battaglia and Giordano each added two. Bailey and Giordano each had one double.
  • Battaglia recorded a team-high two RBI.
  • Kyle Smyth (1-0) earned his first win of the season on the mound. He fanned two and did not allow any runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
  • Yohn Zapata-Baez recorded his first save of the season, striking out three in 1.0 inning pitched.
  • Matthew Brash started on the bump, fanning seven and allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched.
