Niagara Splits A Pair With Iona

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles split a doubleheader with the Iona Gaels on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI single from Joseph Tevlin gave NU its first run of the game. With bases loaded, Dawson Bailey reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Tevlin to give Niagara a 2-0 lead.
  • Niagara blew things open in the sixth inning. An RBI single from Cole O'Connor added a run and O'Connor then scored to extend NU's lead, 4-0. An RBI single from Michael Gabriele, an two-RBI double from Peter Battaglia and a two-RBI single from Benny Serrano gave Niagara a commanding 9-0 lead over the Gaels.
  • The Gaels scored six runs in the seventh, but Niagara held onto the lead as Kyle Smyth came in to get the final out of the game and earn the save.

Inside the Numbers
  • Matthew Brash (3-5) had another phenomenal outing on the mound, throwing six shutout innings. Brash fanned 10, just one short of his career-high, and allowed just three hits.
  • Gabriele, Tevlin and O'Connor led the Purple Eagles with two hits each.
  • Battaglia and Serrano each had a team-best two RBI.
  • Battaglia and Max Giordano each had one double.
  • Giardano and Tevlin led the team in runs scored with two each.

  • The Gaels got on the board in the top of the first inning with a solo homerun and never looked back.
  • Iona scored nine runs in the third inning to extend its lead, 10-0.
  • A two-RBI single in the seventh and a two-run homerun in the ninth iced Ion's 14-0 win.

Inside the Numbers
  • Gabriele led the Purple Eagles with two hits, one of which was a double. Bailey also had one double.
  • Giordano had one stolen base for Niagara.
  • Ben Erwin (0-3) took the loss on the mound. He struck out two and allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
