Purple Eagles Drop A Pair To Quinnipiac

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles dropped a pair of games to the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Friday.

Game Recap
  • The Bobcats took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning after a solo homerun and a three-run homer.
  • Quinnipiac added on one run in the eighth and a two-run homerun in the ninth to extend its lead over the Purple Eagles, 7-0.
  • Niagara got on the board late, after Max Giordano blasted his second homerun of the season out of the park. It was not enough, however, to overcome Quinnipiac's lead as Niagara fell to the Bobcats in game one, 7-1.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Despite a disappointing result, left fielder Benny Serrano turned in an incredible highlight. Serrano made a diving catch, practically taking flight, which landed him on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays.
  • Alex Zulia led the Purple Eagles in hits with two and Giordano had one RBI.
  • Zulia had one stolen base for NU.
  • Tommy Bednarski (1-2) took the loss on the mound. He fanned one and allowed just one earned run in 6.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • Niagara came out strong in game two, as starting pitcher Matthew Brash struck out the side in order in the top of the first.
  • In the bottom of the first inning, an RBI single from Michael Gabriele and an RBI double from Joseph Tevlin gave Niagara a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats.
  • In the top of the second, Quinnipiac halved Niagara's lead, before evening the score at 2-2 in the top of the third.
  • An RBI triple from the Bobcats in the sixth gave them their first lead of the game, 3-2.
  • Quinnipiac added on four more runs in the top of the seventh and came away with the 7-2 win and the doubleheader sweep.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Zulia once again led the Purple Eagles in hits with two, one of which was his first career triple.
  • Gabriele and Tevlin each drove in one run.
  • Brash (1-5) turned in another strong performance on the mound, despite the loss. Brash struck out 11 batters, tying his career-high, and walked zero. He allowed three earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
