LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Purple Eagles were victorious in a high-scoring, homerun-filled game with Rider on Sunday, defeating the Broncs, 12-9, to earn a series win in their first MAAC series of the season.
Game Recap
- The Purple Eagles got off to an early lead, getting ahead 1-0 on an RBI single from Max Giordano in the top of the first inning.
- In the top of the second, both Matthew Grace and Peter Battaglia blasted two-run homeruns out of the park, extending Niagara's lead over the Broncs, 5-0. It was the first homerun of Grace's career and the first homer of the season for Battaglia.
- Giordano went yard in the fourth, sending three runs across the plate to give Niagara an 8-0 lead. It was Giordano's first career homerun.
- Rider got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring once, but Niagara maintained a commanding 8-1 lead.
- An RBI single from Dawson Bailey in the top of the fifth tacked on another run for NU, giving the Purple Eagles a 9-1 advantage over the Broncs.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, a two-RBI double and a two-run homerun from the Broncs cut Niagara's lead, 9-5.
- Giordano, however, continued to impress at the plate, hitting a three-RBI double in the seventh to put Niagara up by seven, 12-5.
- The Broncs added on two runs in the eighth and had two solo homeruns in the ninth, but Niagara held onto the lead, earning the 12-9 victory.
Eagle's Eye On…
- Giordano turned in his best career game, driving in a career-high seven runs while also recording three hits.
- Benny Serrano also added three hits and led the Purple Eagles in runs scored with three.
- Battaglia and Grace each recorded two RBI and Bailey, Michael Gabriele and Grace each had two hits.
- Darian Blanks led the team in stolen bases with two.
- On the hill, Tyler Howard (3-3) earned the win. Howard fanned eight batters in 7.2 innings pitched.
- Grace, who started the game at second base, took over on the mound in the ninth inning, facing five batters and earning his first save of the season.

- Niagara opens its home schedule March 30-31, hosting the Quinnipiac Bobcats for a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 p.m.
