NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles fell to crosstown rival Canisius, 9-0, in a non-conference matchup to open their home schedule on Wednesday.

Game Recap

• The Griffs took an early lead in the game and never looked back, scoring six times in the top of the first inning.
• The Purple Eagles' strongest scoring opportunities came in the bottom of the seventh frame. Cole O'Connor kicked things off with a single to left field and then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Matt Grace was hit by a pitch and headed to first. Darian Blanks then singled to left field, loading the bases with just one out on the board. The Purple Eagles, however, were not able to capitalize, leaving all three runners left on base.  
• Canisius added on three more runs in the third, taking advantage of three Niagara errors. The Purple Eagles remained scoreless in the eighth and ninth and Canisius came away with the 9-0 victory.

Eagle's Eye On…

• Blanks, O'Connor, Benny Serrano, Peter Battaglia and Alex Zulia each had one hit.
• Seven Purple Eagles made appearances on the mound. Starting pitcher Jacob Bruning (0-1) took the loss. He struck out a career-high four batters and allowed six earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched. Evan Kiser and Cal Theal both fanned two.

• The Purple Eagles host the Quinnipiac Bobcats for a three-game MAAC series March 29-30. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29 and a single game at 12:00 p.m. on March 30.
