Purple Eagles Win St. Patrick's Day Showdown With The Bearcats

CINCINNATI, Ohio – In a back and forth game with Cincinnati on Sunday, the Purple Eagles earned an 8-7 victory to secure the 2-1 series win over the Bearcats.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Bearcats in the top of the second inning after an RBI single from Josh Marchese. A two-run homerun from Cincinnati in the bottom of the inning, however, put the Bearcats in the lead, 2-1.
  • With bases loaded for the Purple Eagles in the top of the fifth frame, Benny Serrano singled through the left side, scoring Joseph Tevlin to tie the score. A sacrifice fly from Peter Battaglia and RBI singles from both Michael Gabriele and Max Giordano put Niagara ahead by three, 5-2.
  • In the top of the sixth, after Niagara loaded the bases once again, Serrano drew a walk, sending Alex Zulia home to extend NU's lead, 6-2.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bearcats picked up momentum, scoring five runs to reclaim the lead, 7-6.
  • Down by just one run in the top of the eighth, Battaglia doubled to right center field, sending the tying and go-ahead runs across the plate The Purple Eagles held the Bearcats off for the remainder of the game to earn the one-run win.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Serrano and Tevlin led the Purple Eagles with three hits each. Giordano and Marchese each recorded two hits.
  • Battaglia had a team-high three RBIs and Serrano added two RBIs.
  • Alex MacKinnon (1-0) earned the win on the mound. He pitched three scoreless innings, striking out one and allowing just one hit.
