Purple Eagles Swept By The Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Niagara was swept by New Mexico in a doubleheader on Sunday to close out its series with the Lobos.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the top of the first inning. Benny Serrano singled up the middle, scoring Peter Battaglia. An RBI double from Max Giordano scored Serrano and gave the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead.
  • The Lobos answered in the bottom of the first frame with an RBI double and a two-RBI single to take a 3-2 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • A three-run homerun from New Mexico in the second inning extended its lead, 6-2. The Lobos added on another three runs in the third to take a seven-run lead, 9-2.
  • In the top of the fourth, a sacrifice fly from Dawson Bailey sent Josh Marchese home to put NU down by six, 9-3.
  • The Purple Eagles held the Lobos off until the seventh, when the Lobos scored four more runs to earn the 13-3 victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Bailey, Marchese and Michael Gabriele led the Purple Eagles with two hits each.
  • Battaglia and Giordano each had one double.
  • Bailey, Serrano and Giordano each recorded one RBI.
  • Ben Erwin (0-2) took the loss on the mound. In 2.0 innings pitched, he struck out one while allowing five hits and six earned runs.
  • Cal Theal, who came to the mound late in the game, fanned two in 0.2 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • The Lobos got on the board first in the second game of the day, taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning. New Mexico added one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Purple Eagles got on the board after a sacrifice fly from Giordano scored Battaglia.
  • A score from Joseph Tevlin on a wild pitch and a score from Matthew Grace following a Gabriele sacrifice fly in the eighth left NU trailing by just three runs, 6-3.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, the Lobos scored again to take the 7-3 advantage over the Purple Eagles.
  • An RBI single from Grace in the top of the ninth added one more run for the Purple Eagles but they were not able to overcome the Lobos as New Mexico earned the 7-4 win to sweep the day.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Serrano had a team-high two hits. He also had one stolen base.
  • Giordano had his second double of the day in game two.
  • Gabriele, Giordano and Grace each recorded one RBI.
  • On the mound, Jordan Parranto (0-2) fanned two and allowed three hits and three earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched.
