PENNINGTON, N.J. - Niagara University women's lacrosse assistant coach
Alice Mercer, a defender for the New York Fight of the Women's Professional Lacrosse League, was named to the league's 2018 All-Star Team, as announced on Monday. Mercer was one of just six players to be selected to the team as a unanimous pick.
Â
"I'm honored to be named to the All-Star Team after the inaugural WPLL season and am humbled to have my name alongside the best players in the country," said Mercer. "I can't thank all of my teammates and the WPLL enough. I'm excited to see what comes next in season two!"
Â
Aside from Mercer, other unanimous honorees include WPLL MVP Marie McCool, attackers Brooke Griffin and Kylie Ohlmiller, defender Meg Douty and goaltender Kelsea Donnelly. Both Griffin and Douty were teammates with Mercer when they played collegiately at the University of Maryland. As a Terrapin, Mercer went to four consecutive national championship games, winning twice in 2014 and 2015.
Â
New York finished the season in fourth place in the five-team WPLL. They earned a postseason bid, losing 14-10 to the top-seeded Baltimore Brave. Overall, the Fight had four players named to the All-Star squad, tied for second-most in the league.
Â
On Aug. 23, 2017, Mercer became the first-ever draft pick for the Fight when they took her third overall in the inaugural WPLL draft. In 2016, Mercer was previously a member of the Long Island Sound of the United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX), where she won the first championship in league history.
Â
Mercer is now entering her third season with the Purple Eagles as an assistant coach. After graduating from Maryland with a bachelor's degree in sociology, she is pursuing a master's degree in school counseling at Niagara University.
Â
The Niagara women's lacrosse team will open their 2019 season at home on February 13 against Saint Bonaventure at 5 p.m. The team is coming off its program-best fourth consecutive MAAC postseason appearance.
