Two Singles, Two Doubles Teams Advanced To Finals In Season Opening Tournament

Daemen Invitational Results

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Niagara University men's tennis team began its season at the Daemen Invitational at the Ellicott Tennis Courts from Sept. 15-17.

Invitational Summary
Singles
  • Two Purple Eagles advanced to their respective flight finals.
  • Niagara's number one, Taylan Ozdemir, made it to the Red flight final after wins over Le Moyne's 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, and Millersville, 6-1, 7-5. Ozdemir was defeated by Colgate's Jacob Daugherty, 6-0, 6-3.
  • Josh Wilson, playing in the Yellow flight, won his first two matches before losing to Daemen's Tim Georg.
  • In the Orange flight, Brent Boleslav defeated Roberts Wesleyan, 6-4, 6-0. Boleslav fall in three sets to Le Moyne's Andres Hernandez in the semifinals.
  • Chris Grossi (Blue) and Lukas Wenninger (Indigo) each won their first round match before losing in the next round.
  • Eduardo Villalpando won his first two collegiate matches with wins over RIT's Jacob Meyerson and Colgate's Kun Tan. In the Violet flight semifinals, he retired to Colgate's Peter Hartman.
Doubles
  • In the Wimbledon flight, Taylan Ozdemir and Brent Boleslav advanced to the final. The duo defeated Millersville's Jose Alcazar and Peter Landis, 8-3, and Le Moyne's Philip Blythe and Hallam Doney, 8-6, before falling to Colgate's Jacob Daugherty and Scott Bickel, 8-3.
  • Another pair advanced to its respective championship flight. In the US Open flight, Josh Wilson and Lukas Wenninger won matches against Roberts Wesleyan (8-4) and Daemen (8-5) before falling to Le Moyne's Andres Hernandez and Jason Barton, 8-5.
  • The duo of Jason Wisely and Chris Grossi went 1-1. The pair won its first match in the Aussie Open flight over RIT, but fell in the semifinals to a team from Colgate.
  • The freshman pair of Pere Padro and Eduardo Villalpando also went 1-1, picking up a win in the consolation round.
