Lacrosse Hosts Mount St. Mary's Friday

Playing their second home game of the season, the Niagara lacrosse team hosts Mount St. Mary's on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m. For this game, the team will Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer in support of Niagara's Team IMPACT member, Caralyn Reynolds. This will be the first matchup since 1998 between Niagara and Mount St. Mary's.
 
Last Time Out
  • Niagara won their first home game, and earned their second win of the season, with a comeback game against Cincinnati on March 13.
  • After a two-goal deficit early in the game, the Purple Eagles' offense tallied three goals from Sarah Arndt, Danielle Maio, and Taylor Wolf to take the lead halfway through the first period.
  • Cincinnati reclaimed the lead with a quick goal, but Arndt's second goal of the game sent the two teams to halftime tied at four.
  • The Bearcats took an early 6-4 lead in the second period and held that lead for most of the period.
  • Arndt completed her hat trick with 12:27 to play, but with 10 minutes left in the game, the Bearcats held the lead at 7-5. However, Niagara came back with four straight goals in the final 10 minutes to take a 9-7 lead.
  • Alexis Morales scored the first goal of the comeback at 9:48, and Molly Gray followed tying the game on a free position shot with 5:22 left in regulation.
  • Rachel MacCheyne scored 49 seconds later, and the eventual game-winning goal from Morales with 2:56 remaining put the Purple Eagles ahead by two goals.
  • Defensively, Niagara limited Cincinnati to just 19 total shots, only 12 of which were on goal.
  • Andrea Francisco made four saves in goal to earn the win. She has totaled 34 saves since the beginning of the season and has an 11.19 goals-against average.
 
Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer
  • During Friday's game against Mount St. Mary's, the Purple Eagles will Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer in support of their Team IMPACT teammate Caralyn Reynolds, who joined the team in December 2015.
  • The Niagara lacrosse players will be wearing gold laces, showcasing the color for childhood cancer.
  • The team will be selling raffle tickets for baskets and accepting donations, and all proceeds benefit Brian Moorman's P.U.N.T. Foundation.
 
Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles are one of the top defensive teams in the MAAC, ranking third in scoring defense with 10.67 goals against per game.
  • Niagara is causing 8.83 turnovers per game, trailing only Quinnipiac in the MAAC and ranking 38th in the NCAA. Maio leads the team with seven caused turnovers, followed by Elizabeth Benedict with six.
  • Caroline Crump leads the team with 14 points, seven goals and seven assists. Wolf has scored 11 goals and tallied one assist for a total of 12 points.
  • Arndt scored three goals on five shots in the game against Cincinnati, her first hat trick as a Purple Eagle. Three other Niagara players have recorded hat tricks this season: Morales (2/20 vs. Binghamton), Wolf (2/23 vs. Colgate and 2/26 vs. Robert Morris), and Crump (3/1 vs. Coastal Carolina).
 
Scouting the Mountaineers (1-5)
  • Mount St. Mary's is coming off its first win of the season, earning an 8-7 overtime win against Manhattan on March 12.
  • Last season, Mount St. Mary's finished 6-11 overall and earned a 5-2 record in conference play.
  • In six games, the Mountaineers have scored 43 goals, averaging of 7.17 goals per game. Molly Morris leads the team offensively with 11 goals and seven assists this season.
  • In goal, senior Steph Rurkowski has posted a 10.82 goals-against average and .507 save percentage.
 
Next Appearance
  • Niagara heads to Olean, NY to face St. Bonaventure on Thursday, March 24th at 1 p.m. The Purple Eagles will look to earn a fourth-straight win in the all-time series against the Bonnies.
