Men’s Basketball Begins Road Trip At Brown Sunday

   After dropping a tightly contested game to local rival Buffalo to open the 2016-17 season on Friday, the Purple Eagles start a three-game road trip beginning on Sunday against Brown.
 
Scene Setter
•  Niagara leads the all-time series with Brown, 3-2.
•  The Purple Eagles won the last two encounters (both at the Gallagher Center) defeating the Bears, 68-65 on Dec. 29, 2013 and 75-66 on Nov. 18, 2015.
•  Niagara defeated Brown to collect its first win of the 2015-16 season. Matt Scott led Niagara in scoring and rebounding for the third consecutive game en route to his first career double-double with a then career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. He also added five assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
Tipoff Tidbits
•  Matt Scott started the 2016-17 season with a similar stat line - the team's leading scorer - as he led the Purple Eagles with 21 points against UB. Scott led or was tied as the team's leading scorer in 14 games last season.
•  Four Purple Eagles made their debuts in the season opener against Buffalo. Kahlil Dukes led all of the newcomers in points with 13. James Towns scored nine points, Kevin Larkin had seven points and five rebounds while Shane Gatling played in two minutes.
•  The Purple Eagles had 10 steals in the season opener; NU had 10-plus steals games three times last season. Dwayne Pow had five steals to lead the game and according to KenPom.com, Pow leads the nation in steal percentage (12.12%) which is computed by steals/(%min * team possessions). 
 
On The Court
Brown Bears (0-1, 0-0 Ivy)
•  Brown opened the season at No. 25 Cincinnati as part of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, falling 84-55.
•  Senior guard JR Hobbie led Brown in points with 12 while Tavon Blackmon had team-highs seven rebounds and five assists.
  
Against the Bears (Niagara leads 3-2)
•  The Purple Eagles and Bears have met five times and this will be the fourth meeting in the last five seasons with NU winning two of the last three meetings.
•  The Purple Eagles are in search of their first win at Brown (lost in only visit in 2013).
