HAMDEN, Conn. – The Purple Eagles were on the board first in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, but fell in both games on Saturday at QU Baseball Field.
Game OneThe Purple Eagles (11-25-2; 7-10 MAAC) fell behind early and weren't able to climb out of the hole in an eventual 10-3 loss in the opener against the Bobcats (23-21; 13-7 MAAC).
Quinnipiac scored two runs in the bottom of the first followed by one run in each of the next four innings to take a 6-0 lead. Niagara cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh with back-to-back RBI doubles.
Taylor Hackett stepped to the plate with two on and two out and roped a double into left-center field to plate
Geoff Seto and
Owen Dziados.
Tanner Kirwer was next up and followed suit with a double down the left-field line to score Hackett and get the Purple and White within 6-3.
That was as close as the visitors would get as the Bobcats scored four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and came away with a 10-3 win.
Zachary Kolodziejski started on the mound and took the loss. Kirwer (2-for-4) and
Joel Brophy (2-for-3) lead the team with two hits each. Hackett's pair of RBIs tied him for the game high.
Game TwoNiagara got on the board first in the back-half of Saturday's doubleheader, but fell 7-3 in the second game of the day.
Anthony Firenzi got the offense started in the top of the first with a RBI-single.
Julian Gallup led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice-bunt from
Thomas Rodrigues, and moved over to third on a fly out. That is when Firenzi sent a single through the left side to plate the first run of the game and give NU the 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac took the lead with two runs in the second inning, added four in the third, and plated one in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead into the fifth.
Niagara added a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-3. Dziados singled to lead off the inning and was brought around by Gallup two batters later. Rodrigues added an RBI with a single to left field that plated Seto on the next at bat. The Purple Eagles held the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, but we'rent able to get on the board in the seventh.
Daniel Procopio took the loss on the mound after pitching the first five innings.
These two teams bring the season series to a close tomorrow with a single game at noon.
