Baseball Falls 12-7 In Quinnipiac Finale

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Niagara Purple Eagles were topped in the final game of the weekend series 12-7 by the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday afternoon.

Tanner Kirwer gave the Purple Eagles (11-26-2; 7-11 MAAC) a 1-0 lead when he hit a homerun, the second of his career, over the wall in left field with two outs already on the board. The Bobcats (24-21; 14-7 MAAC) tied the game with a two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the inning then took a lead in the fourth with a two-out solo homerun.

QU extended its lead to 4-1 when a double to right field plated a pair of runs in the fifth. Niagara climbed within one, 4-3, when Anthony Firenzi sent a two-run shot to right field. After the Bobcats added six runs in the bottom of the sixth, Joel Brophy collected his 16th RBI of the season with a single through the left side that brought Fuhrman across the plate.

Niagara faced a 12-4 deficit heading into the top of the ninth after another two runs from Quinnipiac in the eighth. Jullian Gallup led off the inning with a walk and scored two batters later when Kirwer singled to right field. Nick Bernick hit an infield single that scored Kirwer. Fuhrman brought in the final run of the game with a double to deep left-center field. The three-run inning brought the game to its 12-7 final.

Fuhrman went 3-for-5 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored. Kirwer and Firenzi tied for the team lead with two RBIs each. Liam Stroud started on the mound and took the loss.

The Purple Eagles are back in action next weekend with the final homestand of the season when the Iona Gaels come to Bobo Field for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
