Baseball Begins Spring Break Against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh

The Niagara Purples Eagles hit the road once again as the head to the University of Cincinnati for a three game series beginning on March 6, before heading to the University of Pittsburgh for a two game set starting on March 10.
 
Purple Eagles 101 (0-4)
  • Niagara returns to the field after having their final game at George Washington University cancelled due to weather. NU has now had five games canceled so far on the year.
  • The Purple Eagles are led on offense by three players hitting over .300, two of which are hitting at over a .500 clip.
  • Junior Michael Fuhrman is tops for Niagara with a .583 batting average.
  • Redshirt senior Thomas Rodrigues has come back on a tear after sitting out last season due to injury, with a .571 batting average to go along with a team leading four RBIs.
  • Senior Anthony Firenzi rounds out the top three with a .333 average.
  • A total of 12 Purple Eagles have made their collegiate debuts in the team's first four games
 
On the Field: Cincinnati Bearcats (1-9)
  • Cincinnati is currently 1-9 on the year with their lone win coming against Miami (OH) in the Mississippi State Classic
  • The Bearcats are led by Ian Happ (.500, 3 HR, 6 RBIs) and Ryan Noda (.359, 2 HR, 9 RBIs) on offense.
  • On the mound, Andrew Zellner has started three games on the year and sports a 1.69 ERA over 10.2 innings.
  • Ryan Atkinson has thrown 12.2 innings of relief to the tune of a 2.84 ERA for Cincinnati.
 
On the Field: Pittsburgh Panthers (3-6)
  • Before Pittsburgh welcomes Niagara, the Panthers will head to Charlottesville, Va. to open Atlantic Coast Conference play with a three game series with the Virginia Cavaliers beginning on March 6.
  • Pitt's three wins on the year have come against Saint Louis, USC Upstate, and VCU.
  • The Panthers are led on offense by the bats of Aaron Schnurbusch (.417, 4-6 SB), Charles LeBlanc (.371, team leading 13 hits), and Nick Yarnall (.333).
  • Four Pittsburgh pitchers have an ERA under 3.00 with a minimum of nine innings pitched. Matt Pidich is tops with a 0.93 ERA and 16 strikeouts in just 9.2 innings. Marc Berube sports a 1.64 ERA, while TJ Zeuch sits at 1.86 with 24 punch outs over 19.1 innings of work. Aaron Sandefur rounds out the top four arms with a 2.57 ERA.
 
Up Next for Niagara
  • Following the trips to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, Niagara will head to the City of Brotherly Love to take on Villanova, La Salle, and Saint Joseph's in the Philly Big 5 Tournament from March 13-15.
