Final Meet ResultsWATERLOO, ONT. – The Purple Eagles' men's and women's swimming teams traveled north for a meet in Canada with the University at Waterloo Warriors. The women's team pulled off a strong performance all around, winning nine of 11 events en route to a 138.5-68.5 win. Coming off a bye week, the men's team came up just short in today's meet, losing 113-94.
The team also set the program's first records in the 100 IM event, as the NCAA recently approved it as an official event for the 2015-16 season.
Sydney Kligys finished the 100 IM in 1:02.10 on the women's side, while
Andreas Rintel posted a 54.56 for the men.
"On the women's side it was a well-executed meet," head coach
Ben Nigro said. "We took control right from the start and won nine out of eleven events. The whole team came together for the victory.
"The men's depth was strong today but not strong enough to overcome Waterloo's talent. I was very pleased at the way they battled. Despite only winning four of the eleven events they took the minor places to keep the meet close."
The women's 400 freestyle relay team of Kligys,
Clare Curran,
Annie Eckhardt, and
Emily York took first place in 3:42.32, highlighting the first of their nine event wins.
Brianna Smith posted a 2:16.60 for first place in the 200 backstroke.
Julia Casolo won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.85, while Eckhardt earned a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:37.97.
York took first in the 200 free with a time of 2:00.76, and York (55.78), Eckhardt (56.42), and Casolo (56.94) swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle. Kligys placed first in the 50 backstroke with a time of 28.85. In the 800 freestyle, Montana Valler placed first with a time of 9:06.95.
On the men's side,
Robert Brown earned a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 47.39, while
Eric Ebert's time of 25.82 was good for first place in the 50 backstroke.
Daniel Ronen gave Niagara a sweep in the 800 freestyle, winning that event with a time of 7:56.61.
Nicolas Winograd (2:17.41) and
Justin Sagasta (2:17.90) took the top two spots in the 200 breaststroke.
