NIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – A two-RBI single from
Jordan Schwartz gave the Niagara Purple Eagles a 5-4 in extra innings of game two to earn a split of Wednesday's doubleheader against Buffalo at Bobo Field.
Game OneMichael Fuhrman collected four RBIs for Niagara (16-27), but the home team was edged 10-9 by Buffalo (23-19) in the day's opener.
The Purple Eagles scored four runs in their half of the first to take a 4-3 lead into the second inning. Fuhrman doubled to left center field to score
Joel Klock for his first RBI of the day.
Jordan Schwartz collected his first two RBIs of the day with a single through the left side.
Pavel Chavez-Rusova ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Fuhrman brought in another two RBIs in the second with a single to extend his team's lead to 6-4. He earned his final RBI in the fourth after the Bulls came back with a sacrifice fly to center that cut the deficit to 9-7. Niagara scored a run in each of the next two innings but was unable to catch up on the way as it fell 10-9 in seven innings.
Fuhrman's four RBIs were a game-high. Klock went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Drew Fittry started on the mound and took the loss.
Game TwoSchwartz brought in the winning runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to help earn NU a split of the doubleheader.
Niagara built a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the third and fourth innings. Fuhrman's fifth RBI of the day broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning and
Mark Meisner doubled to 2-0 in the following inning.
A three-run third sixth inning gave Buffalo a brief lead but the Purple and White came from behind for the first time when a
Hayden Coll single scored Schwartz to tie the game at 3-3. The score remained tied for the next two innings until UB took a 4-3 lead after a throwing error by Schwartz, who was in center field, set the table for a dramatic rally in the bottom of the inning.
Kevin Paulsen and Fuhrman led off the frame with singles to left field and were advanced into scoring position by a sacrifice bunt by
Greg Rodgers that brought Schwartz to the plate. The junior delivered with a single to right that scored both runners to give NU the 5-4 lead.
Ben Zaccagnino started the game for Niagara and threw 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Geoff Soja was awarded the win after throwing 2-1 innings in relief. Fuhrman, Schwartz, and Coll all had three hits.
Niagara is back on the field on Saturday when it hosts cross-town rival Canisius for its final MAAC series of the regular season with a doubleheader that begins at 9:00 a.m.
