NIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles earned a pair of wins on Saturday morning with 2-1 and 6-4 victories over the Marist Red Foxes at Bobo Field.
Game OneThe Purple Eagles scratched two runs across the plate and
Jordan Schwartz kept the Red Foxes from getting anything going on a way to a 2-1 win.
Marist was first on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but Niagara wasted no time and got a run of its own in its half of the inning.
Anthony Firenzi and
Taylor Hackett opened the frame with a pair of singles and advanced on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third. Another wild pitch scored Firenzi to tie the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the bottom half of the sixth when Hackett led things off with a walk and was brought around two batters later.
Greg Rodgers doubled down the left field line and Hackett, who was injured on the approach to home, found a way to cross the plate to give NU the 2-1 lead.
With NU holding onto the one-run lead,
Geoff Seto got the first out of the ninth with a strong defensive play that saw the shortstop dive to his right and send a throw to first that beat the runner by a step. A strikeout and a groundout ended the game and gave Niagara the 2-1 win.
Schwartz went the distance to collect his fourth win of the season. The junior, who had a no-hitter going through 5.1 innings, finished with the one hit, nine strikeouts, and two walks. He sent the Red Foxes down in order in the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
Game TwoBoth teams battled steady rain, but Niagara was able to withstand a late run from Fairfield to take game two by a score of 6-4.
Niagara scored the first run of the game in its half of the second and held onto its 1-0 lead as
Cody Eckerson gave up one hit through the next three innings. It was in the bottom of the fifth that the Purple and White were able to blow the game open by hanging a five-spot on the board.
Joel Klock and
Hayden Coll got on base for Seto's double to right that extended the lead to 3-1. The freshman, who had advanced to third on the throw to the plate, scored on the next at bat as Firenzi singled through the right side. A throwing error and a single from Rodgers made the lead 6-0.
With steady rain coming down, Marist was able to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth with two RBIs coming on each a triple and a homerun. The visitors faced a two-run, 6-4 deficit heading into the seventh inning.
Jacob Lysiak came out of the pen to collect the save as the senior got a swinging strikeout, a fly out, and a groundout to give his team the 6-4 win.
Eckerson improved to a perfect 5-0 on the year after giving up four unearned runs on five hits. Lysiak earned the save with the scoreless seventh. Seto led the offense with two RBIs and went 1-for-2 with a walk. Both
Pavel Chavez-Rusova and Rodgers went 2-for-3 at the dish.
These two teams hit the field for the third game of the series tomorrow at noon.
