NIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles swept Sunday's doubleheader to finish the 2014 season with four-straight wins over the NJIT Highlanders.
Game OneNiagara (20-31) came out on top in another extra-inning marathon for a 4-3 game-one win in 10 innings.
Kevin Paulsen scored two runs in the first three innings to give NU an early 2-0 lead. He scored in the first on a
Greg Rodgers single and again in the third on a
Michael Fuhrman sacrifice fly. The single from Rodgers was the first of two RBI singles for the third baseman, the next would come much, much later.
The lead would swing to the third base dugout as NJIT (20-25) scored the next three runs to take the lead. The first came in the fourth to cut the lead to a single run and a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh gave the Highlanders a 3-2 lead.
With the last at-bat, NU led off the bottom of the inning with a double from
Joel Klock. Two batters later,
Robert Hansen came in to pinch hit and singled to right and moved Klock 90 feet from tying the game. The first baseman scored in the next at bat to send the game into extra innings.
Geoff Soja, who came out of the bullpen at the beginning of the seventh, only allowed one more baserunner to reach second as the game remained tied going into the bottom of the tenth inning. Paulsen singled and was brought around for his third run of the game by Rodgers' second RBI-single and NU took game one by a 4-3 final score.
Soja got the win out of the bullpen after throwing four complete innings giving up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Game TwoThe Purple Eagles scored early and often in a 7-2 victory in game two.
NJIT was kept quiet after scoring both of its runs in the top half of the first. Niagara cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the opening inning before blowing the game open with four runs in the second.
Geoff Seto and Fuhrman sent back-to-back RBI singles through the left side.
Jordan Schwartz brought home another two runs with a single to left center that extended the lead to 5-2.
Another RBI single in the third, this time from
Joel Brophy, tacked another run on the board. The final run of the season came across the plate in the bottom of the sixth when Klock brought home Fuhrman with a single up the middle.
Klock's single came with a full count and the senior looking to take sole possession of a program record. His walk in the bottom of the fourth gave him 104 free passes in his career and tied him for first all-time in program history. Instead of taking the record, the senior brought home an insurance run to cement the 7-2 victory.
Ben Zaccagnino earned the win after scattering seven hits through six innings.
Connor Sullivan,
Jacob Lysiak , and
Anthony Caringi each got an out in the seventh inning of their final game in Purple and White. Schwartz finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate.
Austin Miller started at DH and went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
