POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles dropped a 5-2 decision to the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday.
Niagara (7-7, 1-1 MAAC) played one of its best doubles matches of the season as it swept all three doubles contests. David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol won in two doubles, 8-6, for their team-best 16th win of the season. Mathieu Lacasse and Lorenz Schwojer won their sixth straight match by defeating Matteo Giudici and Dylan Fletcher, 8-6, in No. 3 doubles. Michael Elortegui and Inaki Belloso outlasted Lorenzo Rossi and Will Reznek, 8-7 (7), in top doubles.
However, the Purple Eagles were unable to carry the momentum into singles as Marist (8-4, 3-0 MAAC) won five of the six matches. Raymond collected Niagara's lone singles win when he topped Joseph Dube in 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 4 singles. Belloso fell in three sets to Dalen Klassen, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, in two singles while Elortegui and Lacasse each lost in second set tie breakers to fall in straight sets.
The Purple Eagles are back home next weekend to host newly-minted MAAC foe Monmouth on Saturday and Saint Peter's on Sunday.
