BOSTON – The Niagara Purple Eagles came up short in both games of their doubleheader against the Northeastern Huskies by final scores of 2-1 and 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Game One
Jordan Schwartz turned in six no-hit innings in the series opener, but the Purple Eagles (4-12) dropped a 2-1 decision to the Huskies (6-8) to begin the doubleheader.
"Schwartz pitched his tail off in game one and we played good defense, but they pitched well too and ended up getting the win out of it," head coach
Rob McCoy said.
After a scoreless first two innings, Northeastern was able to score both of its runs in the third inning with a two-out single to center field. Schwartz gave up one more hit in the fourth and kept the base paths clear through the final four innings as Niagara attempted a rally.
The Purple Eagles had runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but it was the top of the eighth when it cut the deficit in half.
Anthony Firenzi earned a walk and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher.
Taylor Hackett was the next batter to the plate and brought around the run that cut the score to 2-1.
Niagara was able to get a runner on base in the top of the ninth, but the Huskies were able to get the final out to cement the 2-1 win.
Schwartz took the loss after he finished the game with the two runs on four hits and earned seven strikeouts. Both Firenzi and
Michael Fuhrman finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
Game Two
The Huskies opened up a 4-0 lead early in the second game of the afternoon with an unearned run in the first and three in the second.
"We got behind early in game two and couldn't respond," McCoy said. "Although
Liam Stroud hung in there and salvaged a decent start, the damage was done."
Stroud pitched the next three innings and gave up just one hit to finish the game with three earned runs on four hits and two strikeouts through a total of 5.0 innings pitched.
Niagara began to cut into the deficit in the top of the third when Fuhrman hit his team-leading third homerun of the season with a solo shot to right field that brought the score to 4-1. That's what the score remained until the top half of the sixth when Firenzi cut Northeastern's lead to two runs, 4-2, with a RBI that brought Schwartz around to score.
A triple in the bottom of the seventh extended the lead to 6-2 and while Niagara moved a runner into scoring position in the top of the ninth when Firenzi singled to right field then advanced on a wild pitch, it wasn't able to climb any close as the Huskies took game two by a 6-2 final.
Geoff Seto started the game at shortstop and went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks at the plate. Stroud went down as the pitcher of record in the loss.
"They have great pitching staff so tomorrow will be a dogfight as well," McCoy said.
These teams wrap up the weekend series tomorrow at noon.
