Niagara Ships Up To Boston To Face Northeastern

NIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles head to New England to face the Northeastern Huskies in a three-game series this weekend.

The Purple Eagles (4-10) will look to get back into the win column in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader that will feature a pitching matchup as junior Jordan Schwartz takes the mound for Niagara and Nick Berger gets the start for the Huskies (4-8). Schwartz has a team-leading 32 strikeouts and has issued just seven walks for the team's best strikeout-to-walk ratio. Berger has started four games so far in 2014 and, while he has yet to go down as the pitcher of record, Northeastern has won two of the games he has started.

Game two on Saturday has freshman Liam Stroud facing senior Chris Carmain. Stroud is looking for his first win in the NCAA but does have a MAAC Rookie of the Week award under his belt after throwing six innings and not give up an earned run against Bucknell on March 1. Carmain is 1-2 in four stars and has a team-best 1.27 ERA.

Drew Fittry will take the mound for the Purple Eagles while the Huskies will send Dustin Hunt to the bump in Sunday's final game. Fittry is 1-1 this year and had kept opponents to under three earned runs in his first three starts of the year and is second on the team with 17 strikeouts. This matchup will be Hunt's second start and fourth appearance of the season.

Offensively, Greg Rodgers and Anthony Firenzi lead Niagara with 10 RBIs on the season. Michael Fuhrman paces the team with two doubles, two triples, and two homeruns for a team-high six extra base hits. Rodgers leads the team in the last five games with a .375 batting average, but Kevin Paulsen isn't far behind with a .313 average in that same span.

Connor Lyons leads all Huskies that have appeared in over 10 games with a .353 batting average. Brad Burcoff is the only player with double-digit RBIs, collecting 11 so far this year. The Huskies enter the weekend on a two-game losing skid after dropping a pair one-run games to Western Michigan (2-1) and Presbyterian (4-3).

Game one on Saturday and Sunday's single game both get started at noon.
