TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Niagara Purple Eagles wrapped up the season opening series against the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles with a 13-0 loss on Sunday afternoon.
Niagara (0-3) was neck-and-neck with Florida State (3-0) through the first two innings as
Liam Stroud gave up just one hit heading into the third inning. FSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-out single to right-center field that brought in both runs. The Purple Eagles responded defensively in the fourth with a three-up, three-down inning that kept the deficit to two runs.
The Seminoles were able to break through with eight runs in the fifth before adding another three in the seventh on the way to the 13-0 final.
"All things considered, I thought we had a productive weekend," head coach
Rob McCoy said. "We got tested by a very good ball club and competed well in 23 of the 26 innings played. Despite the lopsided scores, the games were competitive and that will help us learn how to prepare for pressure situations moving forward. I'm proud of our effort."
Stroud looked strong in the first four innings of his debut as a Purple Eagle, giving up just the first two runs on three hits before the fifth inning.
Jacob Lysiak had another strong outing out of the pen, shutting out the Seminoles in 1.2 innings with no walks and a strikeout.
Taylor Hackett reached base all three times he went to the plate to lead the Purple Eagles offensively. Hackett went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Niagara has a short break before starting a four-game series against the North Carolina Central University Eagles on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
