Men's Swimming Battles, But Falls To Waterloo

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara men's and women's swimming teams hosted its first meet of the season at the Oxy Aquatic Center against Waterloo on Saturday afternoon.

The men's team dropped a close 132-130 decision, while the women beat the Warriors, 142.5-116.5.

The Purple Eagles had 12 first place winners in the individual swimming events.

"I am so proud of both teams," said head coach Ben Nigro. "The women came out and fought for the second and third places that made the difference in the meet. The men were outnumbered, but stayed in it and just came up short."

For the women's squad, Emily Altier took first in the 1,000 freestyle (11:06.02), while Meredith Ricks placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:01.83). Bridgette Ehrmann topped the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.08 while Emma Pullano finished first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:14.12).

The Niagara men were led by Shane Baxter, who was a part of the winning 200 yard medley relay team (1:36.77) and also won the 100 (50.96) and 200 yard backstroke. Baxter won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 53.65 as well.

Additionally, Shawn Warner grabbed the top spot in the 200 yard butterfly (1:55.64) and 500 yard freestyle (4:46.32) for the Purple Eagles.
