NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Two late second half goals prevented the Niagara women's soccer team from securing a win over Ohio University, falling to the Bobcats 2-1 Friday evening at Niagara Field.
The Purple Eagles (0-5-0) held a 1-0 lead with 22 minutes left in the contest, but the Bobcats (2-2-0) netted a pair of goals in the remaining five minutes of play to come away with the win which included a tally with five seconds on the clock.
"I'm very disappointed with tonight's result," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "We worked extremely hard for 84 minutes to put ourselves in a position to win, and then we gave it away. We need to make adjustments and quickly put this game behind us and prepare for Sunday's match."
The opening 45 minutes of the game Ohio with the majority of opportunities, but NU keeper
Claire Feiertag was able to keep the Bobcats off the board going into halftime. Feiertag came up big in the 28th minute with a safe off an Erin Feeney shot near the penalty kick marker.
Hayley Besaw had a chance to put the Purple Eagles ahead in the 24th minute as
Kori Thorne's corner kick to the far post connected with the head of Besaw, but the opportunity was thwarted by Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston.
Ten minutes into the second half the Purps saw another great shot pushed aside by Liston, this time off the foot of
Breanna Catipovic. Catherine Meyer made a run down the left side, crossing the ball into the box that Catipovic one-timed towards net.
Meyer put the Purple Eagles on the board in the midway through the second half for her first goal of the season. The junior made a run down the left side, cutting into the middle before releasing a high shot outside the 18-yard box that hit the upper left corner of Ohio's goal.
With a little over five minutes remaining in the contest Maggie Murnane took a low shot towards the right corner through traffic that snuck by the outreached hand of Feiertag providing Holly Harris the opportunity to give Bobcats the victory.
With the game looking like it'd be headed into extra time, Ohio was awarded a corner kick that was sent in by Tonya Frasik. A ball was kicked around in the heavily trafficked box before Harris got a foot on the loose ball and rocketed a high shot past Feiertag.
The Purple Eagles continue their non-conference schedule against Binghamton on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m.
