NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. - The Niagara Purple Eagles extended their longest win streak in 10 years to eight straight by dominating local rival St. Bonaventure, 6-1, on Sunday night.
The eight-match win streak is the longest since Niagara (12-6) won eight straight during the 2002-03 season. The Purple Eagles’ 12 victories this season are their most since winning 14 during the 2002-03 campaign.
“I thought we did a solid job tonight,” head coach Anthony Nguyen said. “I thought our double play was a little bit better and we were efficient in singles. We look forward to preparing this week for another conference match.”
Niagara won the doubles point by winning in No. 1 and 3 doubles. The top tandem of David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol won six straight points en route to an 8-2 win. Michael Elortegui and Mathieu Lacasse extended their win streak to seven matches with an 8-3 victory in No. 3 doubles.
The Purple Eagles won five of the six singles matches. Dufour-Coursol picked up his team-best 19th win of the season by easing past Luis Guevara, 6-3, 6-2, for his eighth straight win. Dufour-Coursol’s 19 wins are the most by a Purple Eagle since Eric Garcia won 21 during the 2004-05 season.
Schwojer and Brandon Gallegos followed with straight set wins for their seventh consecutive victory as NU clinched the match with its largest win over St. Bonaventure (5-12) in over a decade. Lacasse notched his sixth straight win by defeating Celso Rehberger, 7-5, 6-4, and Elortegui outlasted Elliot Fanshel in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Niagara heads back on the road this weekend to face Fairfield (Saturday) and Bryant (Sunday).
