FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Purple Eagles took their series against the Fairfield Stags thanks to a late surge that gave them a 9-8 come-from-behind victory on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a pretty wild game," said head coach
Rob McCoy. "We did everything we could to give it away and everything we could to get it back. We battled hard and came out on top, it was a good win for the guys."
Down 8-6 in the eighth inning,
Joel Klock stepped to the plate for Niagara (15-28, 9-9 MAAC) with two-on and two-out. The senior was hitting .264 for the season with eight RBIs, sent a single to right field to collect his ninth RBI of the season and cut the deficit to one run. The Purple Eagles took the lead in the next at-bat as
Jordan Schwartz doubled to center field and drove in a pair for his third and fourth RBIs of the game and to give his team the 9-8 lead over the Stags (12-25, 4-11 MAAC)
Anthony Caringi (2-3) gave up one hit in the eighth and
Geoff Soja allowed just on base runner in the ninth for his sixth save of the year and the Purple Eagles got back to .500 in conference with a 9-8 victory.
The comeback started in the sixth inning when, trailing 8-3, Niagara scored a pair to get within three.
Evan Wexler and
Thomas Rodrigues both collected RBIs. Wexler got his on a single through the right side while Rodrigues’ RBI is his 17th of the season, three short of his career-high set last season.
NU scored another run in the seventh with an RBI from Schwartz. His first came back in the third on an double to left.
Ryan McCauley started the scoring in the inning with a two-run bomb to right field. The senior first baseman finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk. Schwartz turned in a game-high 4 RBIs.
Matt Munson got the start on the mound and got a no-decision after Fairfield scored seven unearned runs in his four innings of work. Caringi got the win after pitching four innings and giving up one unearned run on one hit and striking out four.
Niagara is back on the field on Wednesday when it travels to Olean, N.Y. to take on Little Three rival St. Bonaventure at 3:00 p.m.
