Baseball Welcomes Siena To Sal Maglie For Three-Game Series

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles return home to host MAAC-rival Siena on Sunday and Monday at Sal Maglie Stadium.

The series was supposed to begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, but because of weather concerns it has been postponed to Sunday at noon with the single game being played on Monday at 1:00 p.m.

The Purple Eagles (12-24, 7-5 MAAC) were led by Thomas Rodrigues through a series win over Saint Peter’s last weekend.  His 7-for-12 and three RBI performance won the shortstop the MAAC Player of the Week award.  Third baseman Greg Rodgers had a stellar series with six RBIs and a .462 (6-for-13) average against the Peacocks.

The Saints (14-21, 6-3) are on a six-game winning streak coming with a pair of wins over NYIT, a sweep of the Iona Gaels and a win over Fordham.  Senior Mike Fish leads the team with a .341 average and six homeruns while his 30 RBIs are second on the squad.  Larry Balkwill, also a senior, leads the way with 37 RBIs. Justin Brantley (3-3), Matt Gage (2-5) and Bryan Goossens (1-3) are expected to take the mound for Siena.

Last season’s series was a sweep for the Saints with the last two games were decided by one run.  The second game of the doubleheader featured a late charge from the Purple Eagles who cut a 6-2 deficit to a 6-5 Siena lead with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.  The third game went into extras as Niagara tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth.

Because of the rescheduling of the Niagara vs. Siena series to Sunday and Monday, the doubleheader on Tuesday against UB has been changed to a single nine-inning game.
