VESTAL, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles dropped a mid-week contest at the Binghamton Bearcats, 6-1, on Wednesday.
The lone point for Niagara (13-8) came in doubles. The No. 1 team of
David Raymond and
Olivier Dufour-Coursol won its team-best 14th match of the season by defeating Sid Hazarika and Bastian Bornkessel, 8-5. A new pair debut at two doubles in
Michael Elortegui and
Lorenz Schwojer which successfully clinch the point with an 8-4 win.
The Purple Eagles fell in all six singles matches to the Bearcats (14-9), even though three of the matches went three sets. Binghamton won the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead before squeaking past NU in three three-set matches.
A pair of Purple Eagles had long winning streaks come to an end. Dufour-Coursol, who was named MAAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Robin Lesage to snap his 10-match winning streak. Schwojer’s nine-match win streak ended in a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 loss.
Brandon Gallegos was the third Purple Eagles to lose in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Niagara returns home on Saturday to face Marist (14-3, 5-0 MAAC) with MAAC Tournament seedings implications on the line. The Purple Eagles, who can finish no worse than third, can claim a share of the regular-season title with a win.
