LAWRENCE, KS. – The Purple Eagles had to battle through inclement weather and ended their six-game stretch against Big 12 opponents with an 11-4 loss to Kansas on Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Purple Eagles (3-13) got off on the right foot, stringing together three-consecutive hits to open up the first inning, but still found themselves down 7-0 to Kansas (10-5) after the Jayhawks put up runs in the first three innings. They got on the board in the fifth after
Logan Linder singled to rightfield.
Thomas Rodrigues and
Ryan McCauley found their way on base to load them up, only for
Christian Vangeison to bring them all home with a 3-RBI double to right-center and make a four-run game, 7-3.
The Jayhawks added two runs in each of the next two innings to add to their lead. Niagara scored one more run in the top of the ninth after Linder led off with a double to be brought across the plate two batters later but Kansas still came away with an 11-4 win.
Kevin Paulsen finished with a game-high three hits in five trips to the plate. Vangeison’s three RBIs tied him for the game-high.
Kyle Olver (1-2) started the game and took the loss after pitching five innings.
Connor Sullivan and
Matt Munson pitched out of the pen, with the latter throwing a scoreless eighth.
The Purple Eagles are back on the field next weekend when they travel to Pittsburgh for the Panther Classic. They will alternate games between Toledo and Pittsburgh, with Toledo first up on Friday at noon.
