Niagara University, N.Y. — Niagara baseball fell to Iona 9-3 Saturday afternoon at John P. Bobo Field in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
The loss drops Niagara to 8-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while the Gaels improved to 7-13, 5-6 MAAC.
Niagara wasted little time getting on the board, scoring in the bottom of the first. Jacob Brooks led off with a single through the left side, and Elijha Hammill moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Rees Kozar then crushed a two-run home run to left-center to give Niagara a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Purple Eagles added a run in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead to 3-0. Hammill drew a walk and promptly stole second. Konings then singled through the right side, plating Hammill.
Iona knotted the game up at three in the top of the fifth with a three-run homer off the bat of Rodriguez.
Niagara starter Carter Fink closed out his day in the sixth, throwing 6.0 innings while striking out five batters. Eddie Dolansky came in for relief.
The Gaels took the lead in the top of the seventh and ran away with two more three-run home runs, this time from Overton and Silvia.
Jack Dickinson came in relief for the eighth and ninth, throwing two scoreless innings, but the Purple Eagles were not able to find the run support, ultimately falling 9-3.
