Men’s Tennis Edged By IPFW, 4-3

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – The Niagara men’s tennis team was clipped by the IPFW Mastodons, 4-3, on Monday.

Today’s match came down to the final singles match, but it was the visitors who would come away with the narrow win. NU (4-5) battled to grab the doubles point. NU won in No. 3 doubles when Michael Elortegui and Mathieu Lacasse won 8-4, but IPFW (4-10) tied the doubles match at 1-1 by taking No. 2 doubles.

The tandem of David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol rallied in their match with Daniel Kang and Joao Freitas to come away with a 9-8 (8) victory to hand NU the doubles point.

After four singles matches, IPFW led 3-2. In No. 5 singles, Lorenz Schwojer tied the match by grinding past Martin Muadi, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. However, NU lost in the final singles match of the day, 6-1, 6-2, to lose the match.

“It’s frustrating to keep dropping these close matches,” head coach Anthony Nguyen said. “I know if we continue to put ourselves in the position to be successful we will break through. The guys are really putting in a lot of hard work and hope sooner or later they will reap the benefits of their hard work.”

Niagara heads to northern Virginia to face George Mason on Wednesday and Hampton on Thursday.
